Iraq, Afghan Vets at Risk for Suicides
I can't imagine this article will be a surprise to anyone, but it still affects me deeply every time I hear something of the sort. There is a new Veterans Suicide Prevention Hotline being developed, but what else is being done to support the mental health of our returning vets? So many of these people are of the prime age of onset of mental health issues, 18-25, and they have been through just so much. We have a long way to go. Anyone have thoughts as to where efforts should be focused?

In a perfect world I would hope for evaluation and at least some meetings with a psychologist for all returning military personnel. But, I know that will never happen with budget concerns and image problems for the military. I wonder if this could be linked with the higher rates of homelessness for veterans too. I do think something should be done to get more help out to them.
I've run across this blog a time or two at random, but never left a comment until now when I see it linked off of the new Active Minds page.
This is a great question that you've thrown out there Alison, and one that definitely becomes more and more important as more and more soldiers are coming home.
Having served in the military, I can tell you that there are many mental health resources available on active duty. The problem is though, that it is not often sought out for a handful of reasons. I give just two examples here.
1) Coming home from deployments, servicemembers go through a pseudo-screening. (i.e. a few MH questions on an otherwise physical checklist) If a MH situation comes to light, the SM is often held for further screening while others take leave and go home to family. Most are going to say everything is fine in order to be able to hurry home.
2) Depending on the attitude and understanding of mental health by one's command, MH issues can be seen as extreme weakness and/or something that can be corrected with 'discipline'. Unfortunately, we know, this is not the case.
Looking at the veteran population takes a similar but separate review. Even if the availability of mental health professionals is increased, I worry that servicemembers and veterans still may not seek help because of the 'stay strong, move along' mentality that was ingrained in us.
