Welcome...
Welcome to the Leadership21 blog, an ongoing conversation on mental health, civil rights and social justice. Posting on the blog are twelve young mental health advocates who comprise the L21 commitee, and anything goes--the personal, the political, the cultural, whatever! We hope that you'll check out what's here, and make some comments, and please know that if you're concerned about anonymity, you can comment anonymously. We hope that what you read, and what you contribute, will make you want to return regularly, because to our knowledge, there really isn't anything out there that has the potential to engage people on so many levels about mental health. But we need "outsiders" like you to make it grow into a robust, contagious online blog. So thanks for coming, welcome to the conversation, and please, pass it on--L21
Whoa.
Since Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, I decided to try to beat the crowd and figure out my costume early. Just a few minutes into my search, I came across this costume from
http://www.buycostumes.com/, entitled "Ella Mental Adult." Tag line: "Even when over medicated, this patient is tons of fun."
Is this for real? I know it is, but this is ridiculous. Who is buying this?

Weird! And insensitive--I mean I would feel really uncomfortable if someone showed up in that costume at a party I was at and thought it was funny--
I think that's hillarious - truthfully.
Granted, I can see why it might be viewed as insensitive, sure; but the way that I see it, people make costumes about everything nowadays, and 'adult-costumes' too for that matter. This includes but is not limited to pirates, fairies, doctors, nurses, police officers, animals, soldiers, executives, dancers (exotic and ballet), and more.
In fact, if anything, I'd view this as a healthy sign as it means that the disabled are now accepted as a 'real' group in society rather than being concerned unfit for belonging and acceptable to ostracize.
Of course, that's just me; finding the bright side to every cloud.
